  2. Create a game by selecting a map, team count, and game length, or join a game by entering a code shared by the host.
  3. New players joining need approval from the game owner.
  4. Only the game owner can start the match once at least two teams have players.
  5. Players can also join mid-game with the owner's approval.

Abilities & Items

Core Abilities

Player abilities and their effects
Ability Cooldown Effect

Dash2 secondsBurst forward at 3x speed for a brief moment. Great for escaping or closing gaps.

Power-ups

Power-ups spawn around the map periodically. Walk over one to pick it up.

Portals

Coloured portal pairs are placed across each map. Step into one to instantly teleport to its partner. There is a short cooldown before you can use the same portal again.

Terrain Zones

Maps can include special terrain zones that affect gameplay. The game host can enable or disable terrain when creating a game.

Team-Exclusive Zones

Each team has zones only they can pass through. Enemy players are blocked like a wall, and enemy projectiles ricochet off the zone and continue in a new direction.

Lava Pit

Only the Fire team can walk through. Enemies and their shots bounce off.

Ice Rink

Exclusive to the Ice team. A shortcut or safe zone that rivals cannot enter.

Storm Cloud

Storm team only. Blocks all other players and deflects incoming fire.

Slow Zones

These zones affect all players equally, reducing movement speed to 50%.

Use slow zones strategically: avoid carrying a gem through them, or lure enemies into them for an easy hit.

Maps

Arena

A classic open battlefield with scattered cover blocks and a central L-shaped structure. Two portal pairs connect opposite corners. Best for fast-paced, head-on encounters.

Fortress

Walled corridors and tight choke points create natural ambush opportunities. Features a U-shaped centre structure and three portal pairs. Favours defensive, tactical play.

Islands

The largest map with scattered platforms and open pathways. Partial walls and varied cover encourage flanking routes. Two portal pairs bridge the wide distances.

Tips & Strategy

  1. Communicate with your team. Coordinate who attacks and who defends your gem.
  2. Use portals. They can cut travel time in half when escaping with a gem.
  3. Place barriers wisely. Block choke points or protect your gem's path home. You only get 40 per game.
  4. Dash to escape, not just to attack. Saving your dash for a getaway when carrying a gem is often smarter than using it aggressively.
  5. Exploit your team zones. Lure enemies near your exclusive terrain — they cannot follow you through it.
  6. Avoid slow zones when carrying. Being slowed with a gem makes you an easy target.
  7. Shoot gem carriers. A hit forces them to drop the gem, and there is a cooldown before anyone can pick it back up.
  8. Watch the timer. If your team is ahead, play defensively in the final minute.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many players can play Gem Grab?

Each game supports 2 or 3 teams with up to 4 players per team, for a maximum of 12 players. You need at least one player on two different teams to start a game.

Can I play Gem Grab on my phone?

Yes. Gem Grab includes mobile touch controls with a virtual joystick for movement and dedicated buttons for shooting, dashing, and building. The controls sit below the game area so they do not block your view.

How do I win a game of Gem Grab?

Steal the opposing team's gem and carry it back to your base to score 10 points. The team with the most points when the timer runs out wins. If teams are tied, the game ends in a draw.

What happens when I get hit by a projectile?

All projectiles immobilise you for 3 seconds, but each team's hit has a unique visual effect. Fire sets you ablaze with rising flames and smoke. Ice encases you in a cracking block of ice with icicles. Storm electrocutes you with flashing arcs and sparks, and also knocks you back on impact. If you are carrying a gem, you drop it.

Can players join a game that has already started?

Yes. Players can request to join mid-game using the game code. The game owner will see the request and can approve or deny it. Approved players spawn at their team's base and join the action immediately.

What are the team-exclusive terrain zones?

Each team has special zones (Lava, Ice Rink, or Storm Cloud) that only their team can pass through. Enemy players are blocked like walls, and enemy projectiles ricochet off them. The host can disable terrain zones when creating a game.

Do I need to install anything to play?

No. Gem Grab runs entirely in your browser. Just open the link, enter your name, and start playing. It works on desktop and mobile devices.

How do barriers work?

Press S (or the Build button on mobile) to place a barrier in front of your character. Barriers block player movement and projectiles. They can be destroyed with 3 projectile hits. Each game allows a maximum of 40 barriers total.

Can I leave a game without ending it for everyone?

Yes. Non-owner players can leave at any time using the exit button — you return to the main menu and the game continues for everyone else. Only the game owner can end the game for all players.

Why do players on different teams look different?

Each team has a distinct character shape. Fire players are glowing fireballs with sun flares, Ice players are snowflake crystals with branching arms, and Storm players are small electric orbs with lightning bolts radiating outward. This makes it easy to identify teams at a glance.
